Translation:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The most widely known verse in the Bible. Three words do the heaviest lifting: "so loved" — not merely loved, but with this magnitude. "Whoever" — no exceptions. "Eternal life" — the ultimate stakes. A child can memorize it and spend a lifetime unpacking it. Both things are true at once.

Psalm 23 — The shepherd's psalm

"The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."

Psalm 23:1-3

Read at more funerals than any other passage, and also at weddings, baptisms, and in private in the small hours of the night. The Shepherd imagery is intimate — this isn't God as king or judge, but as the one who knows each of his by name and goes out for the one who's lost.

For grief, for comfort, for all occasions

Romans 8:28 — For when things go wrong

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Romans 8:28

Not "some things" or "eventually." All things. This is either the most comforting verse in the Bible or the hardest one to believe, depending on what you've been through. Paul wrote it having been through quite a lot. He believed it anyway.

For when things didn't go as planned and you're trying to find the meaning

Proverbs 3:5-6 — For big decisions

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Proverbs 3:5-6

The verse people turn to when standing at a crossroads — a new job, a move, a major decision with no clear answer. The instruction isn't to not think. It's to not let your own limited analysis be the final authority. There's a path. Submit, and it becomes visible.

For major life decisions and crossroads moments

Philippians 4:13 — For impossibly hard days

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."

Philippians 4:13

Context is everything here: Paul wrote this from prison, after learning to be content in every circumstance — both abundance and need. "All this" meant prison. Shipwreck. Beatings. Uncertainty. The strength he's describing isn't athletic confidence. It's survival. And it held.

For when what's ahead seems genuinely impossible

Psalm 46:1 — For emergencies

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."

Psalm 46:1

"Ever-present" — not sometimes present. Not present when deserved. Ever. In the middle of the diagnosis, the accident, the phone call in the night — God is already there. Refuge means a place to run to. This verse is the address.

For crisis, for emergency, for the bottom falling out
